The DIY Investor was founded to create a simple investing resource for aspiring investors. The key word is simple. Too many investing websites and blogs focus on using overly complex charts and graphs to sell their investing ideas to you. The DIY Investor takes a different approach by providing straightforward tools to help empower your investing ideas. That being said, let’s start with setting up some basic investing guidelines inspired by Warren Buffett.
The first two guidelines are fairly straightforward. The third will take a great deal of time and effort to uncover wonderful companies at a fair price. Don’t worry - That is where The DIY Investor comes into play. We take a conservative, hand crafted approach towards valuing companies and present the results as a simple range of prices (low / mid / high). Our goal is to help bring clarity on whether your investment idea is valuated at a fair price. The rest is up to you.
During my search for simple investing resources, I found myself constantly bombarded with over complicated analyses and unwelcome sales pitches. As a result, I quickly came to believe that both investment professionals and amateurs alike were trapped in a delusion that said confusing charts and graphs were they key to finding good investment opportunities. In case you’re curious, my background includes working for one of the “Big 4” accounting firms, working for one of the world’s largest investment banks and working with a well known hedge fund portfolio manager.
Thankfully, I came across two quotes from renowned investor, Warren Buffett, that ultimately inspired me use my accounting and finance background to take action and create The DIY Investor.
“There seems to be some perverse human characteristic that likes to make easy things difficult.” - Warren Buffett
"Ultimately, there's one investment that supersedes all others: Invest in yourself. Nobody can take away what you've got in yourself, and everybody has potential they haven't used yet." - Warren Buffett
I immediately related to Mr. Buffett’s words and firmly believed the first and best investment anyone can make is in yourself. The core philosophy of The DIY Investor was formed at the crossroads of these two simple quotes. Investing Simplified.
Welcome to The DIY Investor.
